Science lesson:

A science lesson plan for middle primary school students for recognising the effects of verbal bullying:(may be modified for lower grades)

Purpose: To demonstrate to children that being mean to living things can cause harm to their wellbeing.

Materials:
Three clear jars with lids
Small amount of bean seeds
A label on each jar
Water
Small amount of plant food

Time: 3 weeks-1 month

Procedure:
1. Place 2-3 seeds into each jar and screw the lid on.
2. Label one 'loved'.
3. Label one 'different'.
4. Leave the other jar label blank.
5. Place jars all in line in the same spot.

The seeds in the jar marked 'love' will be watered nicely, fed nicely and spoken to and sung to lovingly.

The seeds in the jar marked 'different' will be watered but not fed. They will be spoken to meanly and told that they look awful and they will never amount to anything because they are not intelligent etc.

The seeds in the blank labelled jar will be ignored. No water, no food, no love, no nasty words. Just ignored like they are not even worth speaking to.

Students predict what will happen to each group of seeds and make a paragraph to explain their thoughts.

It does not matter that the jars are side by side and may hear the mean or loving words because bullying occurs in front of peers who are not being bullied.

Students write or draw a description of each jar each week.

At completion of the task, student write a reflective piece of writing about bullying (name calling).

A cool Arts lesson for your classroom!

Here is an Arts lesson plan to help with learners understanding their feelings about bullying. You will need to cut and paste the original lyrics and the Student Lyrics information. Have fun!

Put your feet in my shoes version 1

Put your feet in my shoes version 2

Arts lesson plan: Music

Level 3

Learning objective:

Instruction for lesson

How will they do ?

Resources:

To develop learning about 4/4 time signature. To develop the harmony concept.

Introduction:

Explain the task

Play  ‘Put your feet in my shoes’

Body:

Hand out lyric sheet but explain that it is not to be filled in yet.

Play song again and let students sing along.

Repeat song until learners are comfortable with the tune.

Brainstorm ideas about what bullies are or how students feel when bullied.

Use these ideas to fill in student lyrics on the lyric page handout.

Teachers who can play the guitar or piano, strum/play the song for the learners.

Play version 2 of the song and students sing their new song.

Repeat until confident.

Conclusion:

Reflect on learning and use the song in a live performance in the not too distant future.

Students will learn the song ‘Put your feet in my shoes’. Students will create their own words and then transpose the words onto the 2nd version of the song thereby making the song their own.

Put your feet in my shoes!       Chords are: B F C C

Original Words:

I don’t like the way you talk to me in that tone of voice!

I don’t like the way you look at me up and down.

Why can’t you pick on someone else your own size?

Do you like to break my heart?

Do you like to break my heart?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My mum says freckles are kisses from the sun!

I was going to punch your nose but then I’d be as bad as you!

I’m sure that you don’t really mean those things you said

Why can’t we be friends?

Why can’t we be friends?

Chorus:

Put your feet in my shoes for just one day,

See how you like!

Put your feet in my shoes for just one day,

Then you’ll know what it’s like!

Then you’ll know what it’s like!
